Who are our Allied Health Assistants?
Our Allied Health Assistants are a growing team of individuals with a wide and varying range of experiences, right across the health and disability spectrum. They bring a wealth of knowledge from many different areas including early childhood education, special and disability education, previous and current studies in allied health professions, hospitals, aged care facilities, and therapy within the community. Several of our Allied Health Assistants have special skills and interest areas including hydrotherapy, massage, paediatrics, and speech therapy.
What do Allied Health Assistants do?
Allied Health Assistants primarily provide face-to-face therapy for individual clients by working closely with Allied Health clinicians. Clinicians work with each client to achieve their goals and may choose to implement an Allied Health Assistant program as part of their therapy plan. This may be for a number of reasons and is determined by the clinician on a case-to-case basis.
The most common examples of what an Allied Health Assistant may be involved with include:
PHYSIOTHERAPY
- Providing face-to-face supervision and/or guidance of an at-home exercise program which may target strengthening cardiovascular endurance balance or flexibility.
- Implement a hydrotherapy program designed by one of our Physiotherapists in a local hydrotherapy pool.
- Providing a specialist paediatric physiotherapy program designed by one of our paediatric physiotherapists.
- Delivering programs which may include elements of relaxation techniques massage and stretching.
OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY
- Providing face-to-face supervision and/or guidance of home-based therapy programs including activities of daily living (ADL) retraining upper limb therapy or community access.
- Delivering programs which may include elements of relaxation techniques emotional regulation sensory modulation or de-hoarding.
- Providing specialist paediatric occupational therapy programs designed by one of our paediatric occupational therapists which may target areas including fine motor skills gross motor skills play skills etc
- Completing research developing resources sourcing quotations as well as delivering and adjusting equipment under the guidance of the occupational therapist.
